Software under any one version of the GNU GPL license falls within a somewhat similar category and is referred to as free software. As stressed by the FSF (Free Software Foundation), free in this context goes beyond the "no payment" concept - it's about the freedom to use, share, study and modify a piece of software. For this to be possible, the source code for that software must be made freely available, which also applies to modified and shared (distributed) versions.

 

It's worth noting that the GPL clearly states that entities that modify or distribute original or derivate software may charge any amount of money for this service. However, this rarely happens and almost every product licensed under the GPL can be obtained without paying any kind of fee.

 

Free software may be used at no cost for both personal and commercial purposes. However, if a person or company creates a derived software product by modifying the original source code and wishes to distribute the result, it must be done under the same free software terms, including the source code modifications.

 

 

 

El programa que está bajo cualquier versión de la licencia GNU GPL entra en una categoría similar y se conoce como programa libre. Como lo subrayado por la FSF (Free Software Foundation), libre en este contexto va más allá del concepto “no pagar”, se trata de la libertad de utilizar, compartir, estudiar y modificar el programa. Para que esto sea posible, debe estar disponible el código fuente del programa, que también se aplica a las versiones modificadas y compartidas (distribuidas).

Hay que mencionar que GPL establece claramente que las entidades que modifican o distribuyen el programa original o algún derivado podrán cobrar cualquier cantidad de dinero por el servicio. Sin embargo, esto ocurre raramente y casi todos los productos que se encuentran bajo la licencia GPL pueden obtenerse sin pagar ningún tipo de cuota.

Los programas libres pueden usarse tanto para fines personales como comerciales. Sin embargo, si una persona o compañía crea un producto derivando o modificando el código fuente original y desea distribuirlo, deberá realizarse en las mismas condiciones que los términos del programa gratuito, incluyendo las modificaciones del código fuente.
